Bribin Cave (Underground River)

Bribin Cave is one of the many caves that have water in abundance. The water was flowing like a river in the cave about 100 meters deep. In the cave which is located in the village of Dadap Ayu, District Semanu, is currently being completed underground water utilization projects, not only to meet drinking water needs, but also generating electricity.
Bribin Cave it self has long been a concern of society and government, even a fraction of the potential of the water has been successfully pumped up and used by the community.
Actually, this cave has long attracted the attention of researchers and speleolog (expert on caves and underground spaces) from various countries. In fact, as reported by Kompas newspaper (February 4, 2010), research on Bribin Goa has given birth to seven master's degree, all the Germans. Unfortunately, our own people are less interested in examining it.
In the arid regions Gunungkidul it turns out water is abundant, but far below ground, in the bowels of the earth. Geologically, the mountains of Gunung formed from limestone (karst), where surface water seep into the soil away and form underground rivers flowing into the sea. In this area there are underground caves that penetrate and reach the rivers are underground.
According to government information Gunungkidul district on its website (www.pariwisata.gunungkidulkab.go.id), Gunungkidul district has a karst topography that is formed by limestone dissolution process. This landscape is known as the Karst Mountains Regions Sewu that span covering an area of Gunungkidul district, Wonogiri and Pacitan. Gunungkidul district has an area of karst area of 13,000 km ². Gunungkidul karst landscape area is very unique, it is characterized by the existence of phenomena on the surface (eksokarst) and subsurface (endokarst).
The phenomenon involves the formation of positive surface, such as karst hills of more or less 40 thousand cone-shaped hill. Negative formation of valleys of karst and karst lake. While this phenomenon include subsurface karst caves (there are 119 caves) with stalactites and stalagmites, and all rivers flow underground. Because of the uniqueness of its ecosystem, then the 1993 International Union of Speleology proposed for Karst Mountain Area Sewu entry into one of the world's natural heritage.
With the help of German government grants for technology, drilling equipment and turbines, and pumps, this project actually started in 2004, by building a dam in the cave. Raw water from Goa Bribin planned to melayanai 97 thousand people scattered in 13 villages and 5 Districts, with the water discharge capacity of 800 liters per second.
Goa has a high attraction for tourists who love the underground tour. Entrance into the cave sometimes we had to crawl because of the low cave ceiling. But after arriving at the bottom, the cavity enlarges to form a very large room where the river flowed with rapids. With the help of light from the engine generator, the room in a brightly lit caves. Cavities are filled with stalactites and stalagmites that are very impressive and admirable, the beauty of God's creation that terpateri in the recesses of the cave, far below the soil surface.
